Flagstaff Water Issues

From the “Friends of Flagstaff’s Future” Water Policy Team

RECLAIMED WATER

The Water Policy team has been working largely on the quality of reclaimed water from the Flagstaff sewage treatment plants.  Although the water is intended to be A+ by State standards it is not intended to be potable (drinking) water; it contains Compounds of Emerging Concern (CECs ); is sometimes recharging the aquifer with contaminated water; affects wildlife; and sometimes is not up to A+ standard. Considerable work has been done to understand these issues, and to learn about the new technology that is emerging to drastically improve the performance of sewage treatment plants.

WATER CONSERVATION

We have also worked on water conservation issues. Flagstaff already has the lowest per-capita water use in Arizona, but know we can still do better. We have studied the current conservation program and have made suggestions to the City for their upcoming Water Rate Study to continue to improve the trajectory of water conservation in Flagstaff.
